...once highly celebrated thoroughbred racetrack in East Boston was suffering from declining purses and shortened meets. Those who worked on the backside –owners, trainers, grooms, hot-walkers, exercise riders, jockeys, horse shoers, vets, feed and grain providers – had been hanging on for years. Many liked being here from May to October before moving on to warmers places. Some, who had families and lived here, took other jobs in the winter. When Governor Patrick proposed giving licenses for three casinos in Massachusetts, everyone believed in the possibility that this track, the only Thoroughbred track left in the Commonwealth, would remain open.
