The Mouse Man

is sincere in his belief that low dosage pellets are the way to go.
“Takes three weeks, they die outside, vitamin K the only antidote
and mice don’t process it. Safe. Would take five-pounds
to hurt a ten-pound pet.”

Tossing small packets up onto rotting ceiling boards, he warns,
“Can’t mouse-proof a house. All an adult needs is a quarter inch,
no bone, just cartilage,”

or the dreams of creatures so malleable they press through fieldstone
cracks, scamper in walls, rummage in boxes,
devouring memory and desire.
