We lived in a tenement in the lower east side in New York, a neighborhood too dangerous and difficult to take a child door-to-door on Halloween. Instead we walked to St. Mark's Place and Krissy went into the stores and shops. I had given her a little candy to start. Every time a saleswoman gave her a treat, she thanked her and then reached into her bag to give candy in return.

That went on for two years until she went trick-or-treating with other children. She learned to keep all the candy then.
